Clematis Leaves for Kids

Tuesday, April 24th, 2012

I made a special pair of earrings this week. . .

Martin and I have been spending time at a local children’s home, doing arts & crafts, reading, and playing games with the children there. It’s heartbreaking to think of the things these kids have gone, and are going through, and how alone they must feel without a loving home. These are sweet children, who haven’t been blessed with the things that most of us have taken for granted growing up – parents to love and care for them, home-cooked meals, help with homework, creative outlets and the encouragement to develop their imaginations, clothing . . . and even things as simple as socks and pajamas. To think that these kids don’t even have basic necessities is just too much to bear.

So this week I was firing some new leaf designs in the kiln, based off the leaf on one of my mom’s favorite clematis vines, and happened upon this beautiful, textural, seafoam-hued ‘Bluebird Clematis’ Leaf. I fell in love with it, so I made a bunch (I tend to go overboard when I like something), and decided that each sale of these earrings should go to help the kids. I find it fitting that something made with the memory of my mom at hand should go to helping others. . . because I’ve never known anyone who gave more of herself to help other people than she did, and she would love this cause.

100% of all sales of these Clematis Leaf Earrings will go directly toward providing these children with their current, most significant needs. Earrings are in the shop, and custom colors are available if anyone is interested (feel free to contact me)!

Hope you’re having a lovely week! xo

Process

Thursday, July 14th, 2011

It has been so hot here the past few days. SO hot. It is stifling in the kiln studio (of course, the kiln studio is an old garage with no A/C and a kiln firing at 1600º+). But I love it – the heat, the sweat, the work, and, at the end of the day, holding finished, vibrant, colorful pieces in my hand. I thought I would start documenting these processes more in photos.

First up: the Ginkgo Earrings:

* Ginkgo sketches, cut into a template, traced onto copper sheet. . .

* The cut, filed, hammered, and pierced shape. . .

* Forming the ginkgo leaf on the dap block. . .

* Sifting the enamel onto the leaves, and loading them onto the trivet. . .

* Inside the kiln, as the enamel is fusing (at which point the iPhone nearly melted taking this shot). . .

* Results of the first firing as they cool (they will be fired and counter-fired at least 4 more times). . .

* A finished pair. . .

See more about the ginkgos here.

Hope you’re staying cool in your part of the world! xo

playing with color

Tuesday, May 10th, 2011

My Dad bought me a kiln for my birthday recently, and since then, I have been absolutely obsessing over enameling everything! Maybe it’s the effect spring has on me, but every piece I’ve created lately has me thinking of what burst of color I can add. Here are a few new pieces this week. . .

Hope you’re having a wonderful start to your week! xo

The Black Sheep (v.2)

Wednesday, May 4th, 2011

I’ve been thinking about creating an Animal Spirit Series for a long time. This installation is my favorite, because it’s quite often that I, myself, feel a little black sheepish. This is the second edition, as I’ve been experimenting lately with enamel and infusing pops of color into my work.

More to come. . .

Meanwhile, in honor of Mother’s Day, there is 20% off in the shop today through Sunday; just enter the coupon code “MothersDay” at checkout!

A new piece fresh out of the studio!
There is a collection brewing – a “collective” of pieces taking shape in my head…but even more from my heart. My hands can’t work fast enough to keep up. These are to be works that are more than jewelry – more than metals and jewels flung together (albeit pretty ones) – they are feelings and meanings formed into art…art that you can wear, and hopefully find meaning in as well. There are symbols and books, poetry and people lately that have been of great comfort to me, and I’m finding the point at which I want to translate these into my work…in my own way. I feel a great need to capitalize on this genesis of new ideas, and revel in the satisfaction of full days of hard work, of getting my hands dirty, and, at the end, seeing something beautiful emerge. It’s a bit the same with life. It has been a dirty, rough year here – one that suffered loss and grief, and really wore me down to a fray. But through the process of healing and regenerating, there is beauty to be found. It appears slowly and in small ways, but I’ve realized it’s up to me to open my eyes to see it. There will always be emptiness in the part of life my mother and I once shared, but I now choose to focus on filling it with the appreciation of all that she left me with and who I can be because I had her for the time that I did. I know it’s been quiet here on this blog front for a while. There has been a lull in the creative process and, honestly, an internal debate on how much of myself I wanted to open up to the world. But if there is one thing I’ve learned recently, it is that life is for sharing…so I share this with you…

This necklace was inspired by John Keats’s “Ode to a Nightingale” – take from it what you will, and most important, what you feel…and have a lovely weekend. xo

Frenchies are back!

Wednesday, January 12th, 2011

My goal was for the first post in the new year to be from the new website, but it’s a bit more of an undertaking than expected. . . so, in the meantime, I wanted to go ahead and unveil the newest collection of Limited Edition Frenchies (and a couple Canadians in the mix too). The last set of these sold out quickly, so I’m featuring a few here before they’re gone. These pendants are recovered antique Art Deco charms, which I’ve re-purposed into one-of-a-kind necklaces. (And there are more in the shop as well.)

Hope your 2011 is off to a fabulous start! xo
